Timed tests cause all kinds of anxiety for students and create children who are math phobic. Research abounds that captures the negative effects of these assessments, but how else do we ensure that kids learn their basic math facts? The Fact Fluency Interview is the mathematical equivalent to a Running Record in reading. It allows us to identify what a child knows and what she needs next. Participants will be trained to conduct the interview and analyze the data. A host of practical ways to let the data drive classroom instruction will be introduced including flash cards, games, one-on-one and small group work, and whole-class mini-lessons.
