Supporting multilingual learners (MLs) in middle and high school content classes should be intentional and impact all stages of a lesson or unit. Teachers must consider how we present new content, allow learners to interact with and practice it, and finally, expect learners demonstrate their learning. MLs need support at each of those parts to be successful. This three-part series will dig deeper into each stage with specific supports and practical strategies that build on UDL principles. First, we’ll explore how to present new content in multiple ways with scaffolds for all types of learners. Then, we’ll discuss ways to keep all learners engaged as they process that new information and attempt to practice and apply it. Lastly, we’ll explore options that allow learners to demonstrate learning with level-appropriate expectations and support.
