Students must have a solid word recognition and language comprehension foundation to become proficient readers. A strong literacy framework reflects the equal value of both areas, yet knowledge of how to explicitly teach language comprehension is not as common. This course is designed to meet the needs of classroom teachers and instructional specialists to provide data-driven language comprehension instruction aligned with the science of reading. Following a research-to-practice model, participants will examine seminal works to identify the essential skills students must develop to make sense of spoken and print language. Through examining evidence-based practices, participants will understand what effective language comprehension instruction looks like in various instructional settings. This four part series will be held virtually on Jan 24, Feb 7, Feb 21, and Mar 6 from 4:00-5:30 each day.
